What is your New Year’s Resolution?

Many folks in Glenville consider the beginning of a new year a time to not only reflect on the year that was, but also to set personal goals for the upcoming year. How are you planning to improve your health and happiness in 2011? Dr. Oyangen and our team recommend that you make a New Year’s resolution to benefit your oral health!

It is important that New Year’s resolutions are reasonable and attainable, and that they improve your overall quality of life—for example, did you know that flossing every day is the very best way to prevent periodontal, or gum, disease? Using a straw when drinking sugary beverages can also help prevent cavities. There are many small steps that you can take to prevent cavities, oral infections and bad breath.

Be sure to give us a call if you need a few suggestions on ways to improve your oral health, or visit this helpful article from our friends at the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD). After all, we know your oral health is about more than just a beautiful smile.

Happy New Year!

-Your friends at Advanced Aesthetics of Glenville

Your pal, fluoride

There are so many ways you can protect your teeth and Advanced Aesthetics of Glenville tries to tell our patients about all of them. You brush your teeth twice a day, floss regularly and protect your mouth from being damaged. But did you know there is another, often forgotten about, way to keep your teeth clean and healthy during your treatment? Fluoride – a mineral that helps prevent cavities and tooth decay – can help keep your teeth strong! Fluoride comes in two varieties: topical and systemic. Topical fluoride is applied directly to the tooth. Topical fluoride includes toothpastes and mouth rinses. Systemic fluorides are swallowed in the form of a dietary supplement.

Fluoride used in the dentist's office is often times a stronger concentration than in toothpaste or mouthwash, but is available at some drug stores or a pharmacy (ask your doctor how to purchase professional strength fluoride). A fluoride treatment typically takes just a few minutes. After the treatment patients may be asked not to rinse, eat or drink for at least 30 minutes in order to allow the teeth to absorb the fluoride. Depending on your oral health or doctor’s recommendation, you may be required to have a fluoride treatment every three, six or 12 months. Your doctor may also prescribe a fluoride product such as mouthwashes, gels or antibacterial rinses for at-home treatment.

When choosing your own fluoride product, be sure to check for the American Dental Association’s (ADA) seal of acceptance. Products marked with the ADA seal of approval have been carefully examined and have met the criteria of the ADA for safety and effectiveness. Take care of your teeth, and smile bright!

Staying connected with Dr. Oyangen and Advanced Aesthetics of Glenville

At Advanced Aesthetics of Glenville, we embrace new technology, whether it is through the innovative dental treatments we offer, our website and social networks, or our modern office conveniently located in Glenville.

For social media to work, however, we understand that conversation is vital, and that’s why we invite you to join in and tell us what’s on your mind. Although social networks are hugely popular these days, we know they’re unpredictable and ever-changing.

While we take a little time to research how to best use social media moving forward, we thought we’d ask you, our loyal patients: How would you like us to use our social networks? What would you like us to share on our blog? Please post your thoughts or give us a call! Have a wonderful weekend!

Ask Dr. Oyangen: Do cold germs live on toothbrushes?

Fall is here, and so is the dreaded cold and flu season. After recovering from your cold, our staff at Advanced Aesthetics of Glenville will tell you one of the most important steps you can take to avoid becoming reinfected is replacing your toothbrush!

Germs can linger on the bristles, and you risk prolonging your sickness by continuing to use the same toothbrush. Be smart - keep a spare, just in case! To protect your toothbrush from bacteria all year long, consider the following tips:

• Wash your hands before and after brushing

• Allow the brush to air dry after each use, harmful bacteria dies after being exposed to oxygen

• Store the toothbrush in an upright position to allow water to drain and dry faster

• Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months. Worn bristles are less effective in properly cleaning your teeth, and can actually be damaging to teeth if used too long!

Hope this tip helps! Feel free to give us a call or ask us on Facebook if you have any questions!

A few tips to stay healthy this cold season, from Dr. Oyangen and team

Here we go again: it's officially cold and flu season, and once again time to remind all patients of Dr. Oyangen to try and steer clear of that cold that's been going around lately.

To promote a healthy and clean environment, we give a great deal of attention to sanitation and sterilization in our Glenville office at all times, as well as following all requirements for sterilizing instruments and work surfaces.

For the protection of other patients, Dr. Oyangen and our staff, we always ask that patients reschedule their appointments if they have any type of cold or illness that can infect others.

Maintaining and protecting oral hygiene equipment is also important this cold and flu season. To protect your toothbrush from bacteria follow these steps:

• Wash your hands before and after brushing

• Allow the brush to air dry after each use, harmful bacteria dies after being exposed to oxygen

• Store the toothbrush in an upright position to allow water to drain and dry faster

• Replace toothbrush after every cold or flu or every 3-4 months when bristles appear worn

Hope this helps! Stay healthy this fall!

Healthy gums and healthy hearts, from Dr. Oyangen

Dr. Oyangen and staff will tell you that gum disease, known also as periodontal disease, is far more common than you may think. Each year, new studies begin to link the effect gum disease can have on the heart, and we have been helping spread the word around Vancouver! One of the simplest steps to achieving healthier gums can be your diet. We recently found a great article outlining several options for healthier gums. Included among the suggestions were:

*Raisins
*Green Tea
*Whole Grains

In addition to these foods being gums-friendly, they happen to be healthy foods in general, and a great option to begin integrating into your diet.

Have a great week! Be sure to give Dr. Oyangen a call if you have any questions about your oral health!

Dr. Roy Oyangen, reminding you October is National Dental Hygiene Month!

At Advanced Aesthetics of Glenville, we just can't believe it's already October. It's a great opportunity for us to remind all our patients (again) about the need to take care of your teeth and gums this month. After all, October is National Dental Hygiene Month.

Here are a few tips to help you build good oral hygiene habits this month:

* Brush your teeth at least twice a day for two to three minutes. Make sure to get the outer and inner surfaces and the chewing surfaces of each tooth.

* Floss once a day to remove plaque from between teeth. Help children learn healthy flossing habits so when they're capable, they know how to do it properly.

* Visit Advanced Aesthetics of Glenville on a regular basis. Children should start seeing a dentist within six months of getting their first tooth.

* Ask us what toothpaste family members should use. Remember that not all toothpaste is appropriate for all ages.

* Eat a healthy diet, rich in fruit and veggies. Avoid sugary foods and eat a high fiber diet of fruits and veggies such as apples and carrots to help prevent tooth decay.

Your teeth are an important part of your body, and keeping them clean helps keep your mouth and your body healthy. By taking care of your teeth, eating a balanced diet, and visiting our convenient Glenville office on a regular basis, you can have healthy teeth and an attractive smile throughout your entire life.

We encourage you to check out the ADHA's National Dental Hygiene Month website for tips on keeping your mouth clean and healthy. Lastly, has it been six months since your last visit to see Dr. Roy Oyangen? If the answer is yes, we encourage you to give us a call at 518-831-9677 to set up an appointment.

We hope you enjoyed your weekend!

With Dr. Roy Oyangen, Zoom® your way to a brighter smile!

We hope you're having a great week! Today, we thought we'd talk a little about Zoom! whitening at Advanced Aesthetics of Glenville, the great way to enhance the appearance of your smile. Zoom is a professional teeth whitening treatment that gets your teeth an average of eight shades whiter — in just one hour at our convenient Glenville office! With Dr. Roy Oyangen, the treatment is safe, simple and relaxing! Not only that, but Zoom! is championed by dentists (and patients) as a pain-free process.

To prepare for Zoom! whitening, Dr. Oyangen will examine your teeth and gums to make sure they are healthy. Your lips and gums will be covered with an isolation material to protect them during the treatment. Then, we apply the Zoom! whitening gel, which is activated by the Zoom! light source. The gel and light work together to gently break up the stains on your teeth. Dental cancer screening technology at Advanced Aesthetics of Glenville

In our continuing efforts to provide the most advanced technology and highest quality care available to our patients, Dr. Roy Oyangen and our staff at Advanced Aesthetics of Glenville are proud to announce the inclusion of the ViziLite exam as an integral part of our comprehensive oral cancer screening program. Every hour of every day in the United States someone dies of oral cancer, which is the sixth most common diagnosed form of the disease. The 5-year survival rate is only 50%, and oral cancer is one of the few cancers whose survival rate has not improved.

ViziLite is a technology designed to assist Dr. Oyangen in early detection of abnormal tissue. When ViziLite passes over tissue, healthy tissue will appear dark, whereas abnormal tissue will appear white. This lets us identify the problem areas to concentrate on and investigate further.

Without ViziLite technology, dentists like Dr. Oyangen would not be able to identify and treat oral cancers as quickly. The earlier Dr. Oyangen can identify these types of cancerous growths, the better we can treat the cancer, and prevent it from spreading elsewhere.

Dr. Oyangen recommends being screened for oral cancers annually. For more information on ViziLite, or to have your own ViziLite Screening, please call to schedule an appointment at 518-831-9677.

Dr. Roy Oyangen, reminding you September is National Gum Care Month!

At Advanced Aesthetics of Glenville, we know that gingivitis - the early stage of periodontal disease - can be difficult to recognize. Many people don't recognize the warning signs - bleeding and swollen gums, as a precursor to gum disease. This month, a national campaign is under way to raise awareness about gum health and periodontal disease, and we wanted to help do our part to spread the word!

Dr. Roy Oyangen will tell you early recognition and action are the most important steps to health gums, and ultimately a health body, too! Studies are published every year linking oral health, including the gums, to the health of other areas of the body, such as your heart. One of the most important steps to improving the care of your gums is recognizing the warning signs for gum disease.

Dr. Oyangen knows these can include:

• Gums that appear red or swollen
• Gums that feel tender
• Gums that bleed easily (during brushing or flossing)
• Gums that recede or pull away from the teeth
• Persistent halitosis, or bad breath
• Loose teeth
• Any change in the way teeth come together in the biting position

If you happen to notice any of these signs, please schedule an appointment at our convenient Franklin office by calling (615) 591-4490 as soon as possible. Dr. Oyangen can take proactive steps to prevent gingivitis and gum disease, while showing you how to improve gum care in your daily oral hygiene habits.

We hope you're having a relaxing Labor Day weekend!

Dr. Oyangen and our staff focus on each patient individually to understand your expectations for the appearance of your teeth. Visiting Dr. Oyangen for regular checkups and cleanings can help prevent many dental problems, as well as to help you maintain optimal oral health and hygiene!

Hey, Dr. Oyangen! What’s the deal with flossing?

At Advanced Aesthetics of Glenville, we hope you're not a part of the 51 percent of Americans who don’t floss daily. Or worse, we hope you're not part of the 10 percent who never floss at all. Dr. Roy Oyangen will always tell you that proper flossing is just as important for your dental health as brushing regularly. Flossing cleans food and plaque that build up between teeth and below the gumline, key areas that brushing simply cannot reach.

Flossing 3-to-5 minutes everyday is recommended, but even 60 seconds of flossing has a great benefit over not flossing at all. Also, make sure to always brush your teeth after you floss, and to rinse with water or mouthwash. When you begin flossing you may experience gum pain or bleeding, but with daily flossing and brushing this should stop within a week or so.

Lastly, has it been at least six months since your last checkup with Dr. Oyangen? If the answer is yes, we encourage you to schedule an appointment by calling 518-831-9677! Summer is a great time for a visit!

Thanks to Invisalign® at Dr. Oyangen’s office, mom and dad can have a perfect smile, too!

Attention moms and dads: Have you been focusing on your kids' teeth and oral health so much that you're neglecting your own? If you've been thinking about having your own set of perfectly-aligned teeth, Dr. Roy Oyangen and our staff at Advanced Aesthetics of Glenville would be glad to help! We are specially trained to offer an adult-friendly option for straightening teeth called Invisalign.

Sometimes referred to as “invisible braces,” the invisalign system available at our Albany-area practice consists of a set of clear aligners that are molded to fit your teeth using a proprietary technology. You wear them all day and night, except for meals, brushing, and flossing – when you can easily slip them out to make eating and cleaning a snap!

If your teeth have slight to moderate crowding or spacing problems, then you’re a prime candidate for this innovative procedure. If Dr. Oyangen determines that Invisalign is right for, you’ll begin the first stage of the process: having photos taken and impressions of your teeth made. Using advanced computer technology, we can use this information to produce a 3-D digital model of your teeth, to simulate the movement of your teeth during treatment, and then to build precise molds for your set of aligners (12 to 48 mouthpieces, depending on your needs) shaped to ease your teeth into the optimal position. You’ll wear each aligner for approximately two weeks, and you’ll be able to remove them to eat, drink, and brush your teeth – a major advantage that Invisalign has over braces.

Serving Albany, Saratoga Springs and the entire Capitol District, we look forward to helping you explore your invisalign options. Please give us a call at 518-831-9677 to set up an appointment, so we can discuss the specifics of your treatment.

Happy Friday!!

How to deal with dental emergencies, from Advanced Aesthetics of Glenville

Dr. Roy Oyangen knows that summer is a season in which many patients experience dental emergencies - especially while they're on vacation. From a toothache to a chipped tooth to a lost filling, summer brings with it a greater chance of people damaging their teeth when they're out and about. Here are a few tips for how to deal with dental emergencies:

Toothaches: Rinse your mouth with warm water and floss to remove any food lodged in your teeth. A pain reliever such as aspirin may be taken to dull the pain. If swelling appears, hold a cold compress to the outside of the mouth or cheek. If your toothache is severe, or lasts longer than one day, schedule an appointment to see us as soon as possible.

Chipped/Broken Teeth: Save any pieces you can. Use a cold compress on the outside of your mouth to relieve pain and swelling, and apply gauze to the area for at least ten minutes if there is bleeding. Visit our office as soon as you can.

Objects Stuck in Teeth:
Try flossing to carefully and gently remove the object. Never use a sharp or hard item to remove objects in your teeth; you risk injuring your gums and scratching your teeth. If you are unable to remove the object, visit our office.

Lost Filling: Sugarless gum and over-the-counter dental cement can work as temporary fillings, but be sure to make an appointment with us as soon as you can to replace a filling!

Lost Crown: If you cannot make it in to see us right away, apply a little clove oil to the sensitive area of the tooth with a cotton swab. Then slip the crown back on the tooth using dental cement or denture adhesive to hold it in place. Don’t use any kind of glue on your teeth. Be sure to make an appointment to see us to properly fix the crown as soon as possible.

Mouth Injuries: Injuries to the soft-tissue of the mouth such as the cheeks, tongue, and gums often result in bleeding. To stop the bleeding first rinse your mouth with a mild salt water solution. Then use a moistened piece of gauze to apply pressure to the site for 15-20 minutes. Holding a cold compress to the outside of the affected area will help ease pain and control bleeding and swelling. If the bleeding persists see us immediately or visit a hospital emergency room. Continue to apply gauze until you are treated.

For more information on dental emergencies, please call us or ask us on our Facebook page! For a full list of medical emergencies and how to deal with them, please visit the American Dental Association.

Ask Dr. Oyangen: How does Invisalign work? [Video]

Part of what makes Invisalign treatment really "sing," is that the treatment is customized for each patient. To find out if you are a candidate for Invisalign treatment, the first thing Dr. Roy Oyangen does is take an impression of your teeth and digitizes it. Using special software, the doctor looks at the current positioning of your teeth, and compare it to the way your teeth should look.

Then, our experienced staff uses special software to map out the exact path your teeth will take from the beginning of your treatment to the end. Based on the results, a set of custom aligners are created just for your teeth. Throughout the course of treatment, you will be required to wear these clear, removable aligners one at a time; with each one moving your teeth closer and closer to their final, perfectly aligned position. The best thing about Invisalign treatment is that nobody around you will even know you are wearing braces!

For more info on Invisalign, we encourage you to give us a call at 518-399-4696!

Friday toothbrush trivia with Dr. Oyangen!

Did you know that people have been brushing their teeth for thousands of years?! In fact, the first “toothbrush” was created around 3000BC! Ancient civilizations used a thin twig with a frayed edge to rub against their teeth for cleaning.

The first toothbrush with bristles – very similar to today’s toothbrushes – was invented in 1498 in China. Brushes were made out of bone or bamboo with bristles made from the hairs on the back of a hog’s neck.

It wasn’t until 1938 that the first nylon bristle toothbrush was introduced and people quickly became aware of practicing good oral hygiene.

Here are some other interesting facts about your toothbrush (and toothpaste), from Dr. Roy Oyangen and team:

• Most people are said to use blue toothbrushes over any other color
• The first toothpaste was used in 500 BC in China and India
• On average, children smile about 400 times per day
• Your toothbrush should be replaced every two months
• The first known toothpaste was used in 1780, Crest was introduced in the US in 1955 and Colgate in 1873

Dr. Oyangen and team, supporting National Smile Month

Did you know that the American Dental Association discovered awhile ago that a person's smile was important than their eyes, hair and body as the most important physical feature? It's no wonder why Americans spend as much as they do on general and cosmetic dentistry each year: people want to look (and feel) great.

That brings us to June, also known as National Smile Month. It's a great time for Dr. Roy Oyangen to remind all of our patients to practice good oral hygiene between your regular visits to our office.

Here are a few simple steps you can take to improve your oral health so that you may celebrate National Smile Month for many, many years to come

* Brush at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
* Floss everyday to clean between your teeth.
* Reduce your intake of sugary foods and drinks.
* Visit Advanced Aesthetics of Glenville regularly (usually every six months or as recommended by Dr. Oyangen).

If you have questions about any of these tips, we encourage you to give us a call at 518-399-4696. We hope you have a great rest of the weekend!

Ask Dr. Oyangen: How can I prevent gum disease?

We touched a little on gum disease last week, but how can one truly know if they have gum (or periodontal) disease? Did you know gum disease can exist in your mouth without you even knowing. In fact, you can have the beginning stages of gum disease without noticing any pain or discomfort. Since gum disease can be undetectable, Dr. Oyangen says it’s important to watch for warning signs in order to prevent the disease from worsening!

Signs to watch for:

• Gums that appear red or swollen
• Gums that feel tender
• Gums that bleed easily (during brushing or flossing)
• Gums that recede or pull away from the teeth
• Persistent bad breath
• Loose teeth
• Any change in the way teeth come together in the biting position

If you or someone in your family is showing these signs, schedule an appointment with Advanced Aesthetics of Glenville right away by calling 518-831-9677. Our doctors and staff can diagnose the problem and save your teeth and give you back a healthy mouth!

Happy Friday and enjoy your weekend everyone!

Dr. Oyangen presents: Parsley and other ways to brighten your smile

At Advanced Aesthetics of Glenville, we see lots of patients concerned about bad breath. So Dr. Oyangen and team thought we'd educate you about what you can do to really keep your chompers clean and breath minty fresh!

Naturally, good oral hygiene is the first step. With proper brushing and regular dental checkups you can keep bad breath (halitosis) in check.

Certain foods, medications, smoking, sinus issues, or even gum disease cause most bad breath. If the stink lingers for longer than 24 hours, you should see us at Advanced Aesthetics of Glenville. It might be something more serious, like dehydration, zinc deficiency, diabetes, liver failure, kidney failure, or even certain kinds of cancers!

In the meantime, here are some home remedies to keep you smiling bright from Dr. Oyangen and staff.

--Spice Up Your Life

Snack on some cloves, fennel, or anise after each particularly odorous snack.
--Don’t forget the tongue
Lots of people brush their teeth regularly, but leave the tongue alone. One of the main causes of bad breath is food and plaque residue on the surface of your tongue. So give it a nice gentle brush-over too!
--Watch your drinking habits
The worst options are coffee, wine, whiskey, and beer.
--Frequent brushing
Carry a toothbrush with you so brushing after each meal is convenient and refreshing! Trust us, you’ll love the way it makes you feel. If you can’t brush, still swish around a couple sips of water to remove any lingering food.
--Make your own Gargle
Gargling with a home mixture of sage, calendula, and myrrh gum extracts four times a day should ward off that bad breath potential.
--Parsley’s there for a reason
Finish your parsley after you finish your dinner and you’ll find a refreshing breath enhancer. Hate the texture? Throw a couple sprigs in a blender to sip after each meal.
--Sugarless Gum
Always a good idea to carry some mints or sugarless gum for that quick spruce up before you meet the boss.
--Don’t cut that cheese
The stronger the cheese, the stinkier your breath can become. Think about blue cheese and Roquefort? They really get the party started in your mouth and it’s hard to make them leave!

We hope these tips help! Give us a call at 518-831-9677 if you have any questions and have a nice and relaxing Memorial Day weekend!

Dr. Roy Oyangen, protecting you from oral cancer

In our continuing efforts to provide the most advanced technology and highest quality care available to our patients, Dr. Roy Oyangen and our team at Advanced Aesthetics of Glenville screen our patients for oral cancer. Fact is, every hour of every day in the U.S., someone dies of oral cancer, which happens to be the sixth-most common form of the disease. The 5-year survival rate is only 50 percent, and oral cancer is one of the few cancers whose survival rate has not improved.

That's why try to detect it early.

Early detection of pre-cancerous tissue can minimize or eliminate the devastating effects of oral cancer and possibly save your life. Ask Dr. Oyangen about a screening at your next appointment! Enjoy your weekend!

Patient question for Dr. Oyangen: "I have diabetes - can I still get an implant?"

Dr. Roy Oyangen understands dry mouth, gum disease, delayed healing and other health issues are all special concerns for our patients with diabetes. But what are your options when infection has weakened teeth beyond repair? In many cases, Dr. Oyangen recommends dental implants as permanent replacements for damaged teeth. Recent studies of dental implants with diabetic patients have shown success rates of higher than 90 percent.

If you have diabetes and have lost one or more teeth (and your diabetes is under control), you may consider implants. However, if your blood sugar is not controlled, Dr. Oyangen recommends putting off any non-emergency dental care – including implants, dentures and bridgework – until you’ve worked with your primary care physician to control it. Dr. Oyangen has been trained to place and restore numerous systems especially Nobel Biocare and Branemark (the best known worldwide).

Otherwise, feel free to give us a call at 518-831-9677 and our staff will try to answer any diabetes-related question we can.

Teeth whitening in Saratoga Springs

Dr. Roy Oyangen knows people want to look and feel great, and at a time when a set of sparkling teeth might mean the difference between getting a job, more and more folks are opting to get their teeth whitened.

Regardless of how diligently you take care of your pearly whites, some discoloration will inevitably occur over time. There are, however, a number of ways to return your smile to its original dazzling state. Whether you brighten your smile at home or in our office near Saratoga Springs, tooth whitening definitely turns back the clock. How? Tooth whitening reverses the ravages of coffee, tea, cola, red wine, and tobacco – as well as the gradual color change brought on by aging.

We also have in-home whitening treatments, including teeth whitening trays, teeth-whitening strips, paint-on teeth whitening and whitening toothpaste. If you choose the at-home option, you’ll receive individualized instruction on how to administer your tooth whitening solution. We’ll make a cast of your teeth and use that to create a customized mouth tray that fits comfortably in your mouth. The tray will hold a mild solution of carbamide peroxide against the teeth, releasing a non-toxic bleaching agent.

Have you visited Advanced Aesthetics of Glenville during the past six months? Please give us a call at 518-831-9677.

Smile now, smile later, smile often!

Warning: this is not an April Fool's joke: People with big smiles may live than those who don’t, according to a new study at Michigan’s Wayne State University. Dr. Oyangen has known for a long time that positive emotion has been linked to both physical and mental health, but researchers there used information from the Baseball Register to look at photos of 230 players who began their baseball careers before 1950.

The players' faces were enlarged, and a rating of their smile intensity was made by researchers (varied between big smile, no smile or partial smile). The players' smile ratings were compared with data from deaths that occurred from 2006 through the end of 2009. The researchers took into account in their analysis to consider other factors associated with life longevity, such as body mass index, or BMI, career length and, believe it or not, college attendance.

The results? The researchers found that players who weren't smiling died at the average age of 72.9 years. Players with partial smiles lived to be 75. Those with big smiles, however, lived on average to be 79.9 years old.

Our staff's take-away from the new study? Smile now, smile often and you might just live longer! Have you perfected your smile by visiting Dr. Oyangen lately? If not, give our team a call at 518-831-9677! We look forward to hearing from you!

Dairy, your diet and periodontal disease, from Advanced Aesthetics of Glenville

Dr. Oyangen wants to know: is dairy a major part of your diet? If not, it probably should be! A 2008 study from the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) has found that regular consumption of dairy products, such as milk, cheese and yogurt, can actually lower your chances of contracting periodontal disease, or gum disease.

Gum disease is caused by a bacterial infection in the mouth that affects the gums and jaw. Gum disease results in a loss of teeth and bone, and has been connected to certain cases of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, respiratory disease and osteoporosis.

Results of the study showed that adults who consume at least 55 grams of lactic acid a day are less at risk for gum disease. Eating dairy is not just healthy for building strong bones, but is essential for maintaining a strong, healthy mouth. Next time you reach for a quick snack, choose some cheese, or a glass of milk, and remember with each bite, and every sip you are preserving your teeth for a lifetime of smiles and good oral health!

To learn more about how including dairy in your diet can help you lessen the risk the risk for periodontal disease, please give us a call!

March is National Nutrition Month! From Dr. Roy Oyangen

You may remember our post from a few weeks ago about February being American Heart Month. Well, we're now well into March, and March happens to be National Nutrition Month. Every March, Dr. Roy Oyangen and thousands of dentists take time to celebrate this occasion. This March, Dr. Oyangen and our team at Advanced Aesthetic of Glenville want you to think diabetes, obesity and periodontal disease, and how healthful eating and physical activity may improve periodontal health.

Dr. Oyangen and team know small changes really can make a big difference, and the American Dietetic Association (ADA) has some advice on ways to start improving your diet beginning this March:

Focus on fruits and veggies: Add a serving each day to one meal and increase it every few weeks. Adding more of these foods into your diet is important whether you buy frozen, fresh or organic.

Look locally: From farmer’s markets to community-supported agriculture, you have many options to find new, fresh foods here in Glenville and surrounding communities.

Make calories count: When you are choosing between options, focus instead on the one with more of the vitamins and nutrients that you need. Sometimes, foods with fewer calories aren’t always the healthiest options.

Test your taste buds: Expand your horizons. Try a fish you’ve never eaten before or find a new vegetable recipe. By testing yourself, you might find new health favorites to add to your regular grocery list.

Trick yourself with treats: If you have a sweet tooth, enjoy some fruit and yogurt for dessert. If you care for a snack in the afternoon, have some trail mix or nuts.

We hope this helps! Give us a call at 518-831-9677 if you have any questions!

Ask Dr. Oyangen: Why regular checkups?

Are you brushing your teeth twice a day? If yes, that’s great! However, don’t forget that it’s also vital to visit Dr. Roy Oyangen every six months in addition to brushing your teeth a couple times a day and flossing. Regular dental checkups at Advanced Aesthetics of Glenville are crucial for maintaining good oral health. Dr. Oyangen can:

• Check for problems that might not be seen or felt
• Detect cavities and early signs of decay
• Treat oral health problems early
• Show you how to properly brush and floss your teeth

During an oral exam Dr. Oyangen will check the health of your mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue. Checkups will also include a thorough teeth cleaning and polishing. If you have not visited Dr. Oyangen in the last six months, it’s time for you to schedule an appointment!

Gummy Tummy and YOU, from Advanced Aesthetics of Glenville

Dr. Roy Oyangen and team know the rumors going around – mostly among young people – that once you swallow a piece of chewing gum it will stake a claim and take up residency in your stomach for at least seven years! Well, we really hate to take all the fun out of the mystery, but the truth is that chewing gum, when swallowed, will enter the stomach and move through the digestive system just like any other piece of food - and leave the body long before seven years! So, if you ever have accidentally swallowed a piece of gum, there is no need to worry, says Dr. Oyangen.

This being said, gum does not have any dietary benefits, so while it’s not harmful to swallow, you still want to avoid swallowing it. If you are a gum-chewer, make sure you chew sugarless gum, because gum with sugar can lead to cavities. Sugarless gum still has the same amount of flavor, but with less cavity causing ingredients. You see, when the bacterium in your mouth breaks down sugar, what’s left behind is acid. This acid eats away at the enamel coating of your teeth, causing holes that we call cavities. Cavities can lead to other long term mouth problems if they are not treated in time, so it is best to try and avoid overexposing your teeth to too many harmful substances!

Happy (sugar-free) gum chewing, from the team at Advanced Aesthetics of Glenville!

Dr. Roy Oyangen, supporting National Children’s Dental Health Month

Remember last week, when we blogged about the need to screen for gum and heart disease during the month of February, also known as "America's Heart Month"? Well, February is also synonymous with National Children’s Dental Health Month, and Dr. Roy Oyangen is here to tell you about the need for preventative oral care in kids.

For 60 Februaries, the American Dental Association, or ADA, has sponsored National Children's Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. National Children's Dental Health Month began as a one-day event in 1941 in a Cleveland clinic. In 1981, however, the program was extended to a month-long celebration known today as National Children’s Dental Health Month.

Each February, Dr. Oyangen and thousands of fine American dental professionals focus on the preventive oral care of our children. Dr. Oyangen and our staff want you to remember developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. Has your child visited Advanced Aesthetics of Glenville the past six months? If not, it’s time to give us a call at 518-831-9677 and schedule an appointment!

February is American Heart Month, from Dr. Roy Oyangen

Since February is Heart Month, we wanted to let you know about the importance of oral health and its connection to your heart's health too! It’s a great time to take notice of the health of your heart, says Dr. Oyangen. Cardiovascular disease remains American's number one killer, according to the American Heart Association. Studies have shown a correlation between gum disease and heart disease, underscoring the importance of good oral health care.

Visiting our office regularly can help prevent gum disease or at least catch it in its early stages. And because people with dental insurance are more likely to visit their dentist when they should, a healthy mouth begins with a visit to Advanced Aesthetics of Glenville. In observance of Heart Month, Dr. Oyangen says it’s also important to know your numbers: blood pressure (less than 120/80), cholesterol (less than 200) and BMI (less than 25). If you have any questions about heart health, or about your treatment at Advanced Aesthetics of Glenville, please give us a call at 518-831-9677.

A few useful Invisalign® Tips, from Dr. Roy Oyangen

We've told you before, our wonderful patients, about the advantage of Invisalign treatment with Dr. Oyangen. Well, today, we thought we'd tell you about a few Invisalign tips! When wearing your Invisalign aligners, Dr. Oyangen wants you to ask yourself the following three questions:

1. Am I eating with my aligners on? - These aligners are removable and should be taken out when you eat.

2. Am I drinking anything other than water with my aligners on? - Though it's not a necessity for you to take out your aligners while you drink, think about how sticky a soda is. If you take out your aligners when drinking a soda, you have a better chance of keeping your aligners clean.

3. Am I brushing before putting the trays on? - The aligners have both an inside and outside. Keeping the outside clean is easy. Keeping the inside clean is also easy: just make sure you've brushed your teeth before putting the trays on.

These are all very simple steps, and ultimately, they help to keep you building good oral habits. If you have any questions about Invisalign or your treatment here at Advanced Aesthetics of Glenville, please give us a call!

Enjoy your weekend!

The importance of straight teeth, from Dr. Oyangen

Some people wonder why Dr. Oyangen and team work so hard to give our patients straight teeth. Of course it’s nice to have a smile full of evenly aligned teeth, but did you know that straightening your teeth can keep them healthier? Straight teeth lead to better oral hygiene, increasing your chances of keeping your own natural teeth for a lifetime.

Straight teeth are less prone to decay, because they collect less plaque—the sticky colorless substance that forms on our teeth and leads to tooth decay; and they are easier to keep clean!

If you’re wondering whether your teeth might cause problems because they are out of alignment, give us a call at (518) 831-9677 to set up an appointment. Dr. Oyangen can help you decide whether or not you will benefit from treatment at Advanced Aesthetics of Glenville.

Ask Dr. Oyangen: Is Invisalign® really customized for each patient?

Yes, it is, and that’s part of what makes it work, Dr. Oyangen says. To find out if you are the right candidate for Invisalign treatment, the first thing we do is to take an impression of your teeth as they are now and digitize it. Using special software, we look at the current positioning of your teeth and compare it to the way your teeth should look.

Next Dr. Oyangen and team use special software to map out the exact path your teeth will take from the beginning of your treatment to the end. Based on the results, a set of custom aligners are created just for your teeth. Throughout the course of treatment, you will be required to wear these clear, removable aligners one at a time; each one moving your teeth closer and closer to their final, perfectly aligned position. And since the aligners are virtually invisible, nobody around you will even know you are wearing braces!

Dr. Oyangen is a certified Invisalign provider. If you have questions about Invisalign, or would like to find out if you are a candidate for Invisalign treatment, give us a call at 518-831-9677 or request an appointment. Have a great rest of the week.
